Apache Gunnery at Bergen, Germany

Apache Gunnery

From the archive: photographed in March 2017, published in 2026.

On 16 March 2017 I joined a KNVOL excursion to Germany to watch 301 Squadron “Redskins” of the Royal Netherlands Air Force at work. The location: the shooting range at Bergen (Osterheide), where the Dutch AH-64D Apaches come to train their gunnery skills 🎯

A day on the range

What a day! Apaches hovering head-on over the range, low passes along the treeline and lift-offs in clouds of sand and dust 🚁 In between the sorties we got close to the helicopters and their crews, from the pre-flight walk-around to the ground crew getting everything ready for the next run.

Below you’ll find my favourite shots of the day 📸

Prefer them in black and white? In April 2024 I revisited this day with a black and white edit. You can find it in the 2024 April Gallery.

Enjoy! ✈️✨
